How to get a more useful result
Use your own tariff or quote figures, then run the calculator again with a more conservative assumption for the input you are least sure about. A decision that still looks sensible under both cases is more robust than one that only works under optimistic inputs.
Time-of-use tariffs are whole-home decisions
A low overnight electricity price is valuable only for energy that can genuinely be moved into that window. EV charging is often the largest flexible load, but daytime household consumption may be charged at a higher rate on the same tariff. A proper comparison therefore includes both the car and the rest of the home.
Standing charges, cheap-window length and the percentage of EV charging that can occur overnight can all change the result. Battery owners may have additional flexibility, while households with electric heating can have high demand outside the cheapest hours.
Use your own consumption split
Smart-meter data is ideal because it shows when energy is actually used. If you only have annual totals, test several day/night splits. The useful question is not whether the cheap rate looks attractive in isolation, but whether the total annual bill is lower under realistic behaviour.
