Heat Pump & Heating Calculators UK

Estimate heat-pump running cost and compare useful heat costs against a gas boiler using UK tariff inputs and seasonal performance assumptions.

Use your own tariff and seasonal performance assumptions. A heat-pump comparison is only useful when it compares the same useful heat delivered to the home.

How to get a more useful result

Use your own tariff or quote figures, then run the calculator again with a more conservative assumption for the input you are least sure about. A decision that still looks sensible under both cases is more robust than one that only works under optimistic inputs.

Compare useful heat, not just fuel prices

Heating systems convert purchased energy into useful heat with different efficiencies. A direct comparison of electricity p/kWh and gas p/kWh therefore misses the effect of heat-pump seasonal performance and boiler efficiency. The heat-pump versus gas calculator converts both options to a cost per unit of useful heat before comparing annual running cost.

For portable electric heating, the calculation is simpler because almost all metered electricity becomes heat in the room, but runtime still dominates cost. Thermostats, insulation, room size and outdoor temperature determine how long the heater actually needs to operate.

Use a range for uncertain inputs

Annual heat demand is often estimated rather than directly measured. Test a lower and higher demand along with different seasonal heat-pump efficiencies. If the result only looks favourable under one optimistic combination, the decision is more sensitive than a single headline figure suggests.
