Appliance electricity cost

How much does a washing machine cost to run?

This worked example uses 700 W, 1 hours on each use day and 260 use days per year. Change any of these inputs in the calculator.

Important assumption

Most electricity is used to heat water. Eco programmes and lower temperatures can change the real kWh per cycle.

What changes washing machine electricity use?

Most washing-machine electricity is used to heat water, which is why programme temperature matters. Modern eco cycles can run for longer while using less energy. Load size, spin speed and cycle choice affect both the washer itself and the energy required for subsequent tumble drying.

Make this estimate more realistic

Use the energy-label or manufacturer kWh-per-cycle figure for the programme you normally choose. Multiply by annual cycle count, then test how changing temperature or frequency affects cost. Water use is a separate household cost and is not included in this electricity-only example.

Electricity prices change, so the 15p, 25p and 35p/kWh rows are sensitivity examples rather than a current-tariff claim. Use the linked calculator with the unit rate shown on your own bill before relying on the annual cost.

This is a worked planning estimate, not a measurement of your appliance. A smart plug, energy monitor or manufacturer annual-kWh figure usually gives a better real-world input for cycling appliances.
