Appliance electricity cost

How much does an electric oven cost to run?

This worked example uses 2,400 W, 1 hours on each use day and 182 use days per year. Change any of these inputs in the calculator.

Important assumption

Ovens cycle their heating elements, so 2.4 kW continuous for one hour is deliberately conservative as a simple worked example.

What changes electric oven electricity use?

An oven heats at high power initially and then cycles to maintain temperature. Pre-heating time, temperature, fan mode, door opening and the amount of food being cooked all affect total kWh. Using the full rated power for the full cooking time is usually a conservative simplification.

Make this estimate more realistic

For purchase or behaviour comparisons, use a kWh-per-cook figure if available. Batch cooking can make a full oven efficient per portion, while heating it for a single small item may be less efficient than a smaller appliance. Model the cooking pattern you actually use.

Electricity prices change, so the 15p, 25p and 35p/kWh rows are sensitivity examples rather than a current-tariff claim. Use the linked calculator with the unit rate shown on your own bill before relying on the annual cost.

This is a worked planning estimate, not a measurement of your appliance. A smart plug, energy monitor or manufacturer annual-kWh figure usually gives a better real-world input for cycling appliances.
